The Interior Turret is an automatic weapon that will target and fire upon a variety of targets. Whilst it is presumably intended to be an anti-personnel weapon for the rooms and corridors of a ship, it is functionally identical to the Gatling Turret, with the only unique feature being that it is considerably smaller (and less powerful). Hence, it works perfectly well as an alternative in situations where a full-size turret won't fit, or if you cannot afford the resources in Survival Mode.
