Summary
In short, encounters are in game events such as structures spawning in space.
Types
There are two main types of encounters the first is cargo ships which are large grid ships that attack on sight. (notice that they can spawn owned by your faction and will attack other ships). The second are crashed ships which can be any size and usually have active turrets.
