Introduced in update Update 01.022.000 Solar Panels are a thin 2x4 block that produces power when in sunlight. Power output increased in update Update 01.039.000 to 120kw (0.12MW) for large ship panels, and 30kw (0.03MW) for small ship panels.
A key component is Solar Cells, for you need 64 for the large ship version, and 16 for the small ship panel. Expect to mine a lot of Silicon Ore to make these cells.

Best used with Batteries set to recharge or auto mode, so as to create MW power output when required, for short periods. For example two Batteries charged by solar panels is able to power a 5MW required machine (refinery, assembler etc) for as long as the batteries remain charged.
