A 5.56x45mm NATO Magazine must be in your inventory to use the Automatic Rifle in Survival Mode. Each magazine holds 20 shots.
As of December 2014, no matter how many clips of ammo are in your inventory, you will only be able to fire approx. 30 rounds before it uses all the ammo.
