Inertia dampeners stop the player if they're moving through space without any input or gravity field. Players always have them, but ships require gyroscopes and thrusters in order to have this function. Their status is indicated in the HUD. They can be toggled with Z. Note that thrusters being used by inertia dampeners will be more powerful than they will be when maneuvering (i.e., using the movement controls).
