History
Expansion and War
Around 2030, mankind began its first colonization of Mars. Over the years, these colonies expanded and grew, until a true culture formed that was separate from its original planet of Earth, and was ushered in by the coming of a new generation which had never even set foot on the earth itself.
This culture thrived on technological innovation, and had established a trade system between the two planets which became highly prosperous. New developments meant the colony was eventually able to sustain itself, with the primary threat coming from meteors, along with the occassional pirate attacks, which were on the rise as mankind continued to expand to the stars.
To counteract these threats, one of the colonies developed advanced point defense systems to destroy incoming meteors and pirates. The system was well ahead of its time, and capable of outranging any of the naval vessels of that day.
Eventually, the various governments of earth took notice of this new technology, and began to place bids for it themselves. Worse yet, some of the governments that had originally sponsored the colonies laid claim to the new technology, and sent their various navies to capture the technology by force. Mars was placed under martial law, and eventually war broke out on the planet between the various earth governments seeking technological gain. The scientists who had developed these technologies eventually grew tired of seeing what they had developed for defense against pirates instead be used to shoot down civilian vessels violating quarantines and curfues.
Several of these scientists formed a conspiracy to destroy their own creations as a response. By promising cooperation with the governments and claiming to be improving upon the technology, the scientists were able to introduce various kinds of fatal flaws into the systems. Eventually the system was brought down, and governments of earth no longer had any prizes to gain. Enraged, they hunted the conspirators down and publicly executed them. Unfortunately, it did not stop there, and their families were hunted down and their colonies bombed from orbit.
Some of the conspirators, however, had seen this coming, and they had secretly begun building exploration ships in the event that the sabotage would fail or such a response would occur. These exploration ships were esentially cargo vessels rigged with improved engines for blockade running. As colonies were bombed from orbit, these ships flew full speed out into the void, with many getting shot down in their attempts to escape.
Founding
The survivors made for the outer rim of the solar system, and within several years they made it to the Saturn system. Believing it remote enough to go unnoticed, they began colonization of the moon of Titan, and creating mining operations within the rings and in the atmosphere of Saturn itself.
The members of this new society identified themselves with the Phoenix, having seen their civilization as one that rose out of the ashes of another.
Over time, the new colonies expanded and became prosperous. Those who had fled Mars set the development of this new generation of colonies, and warned them against those who would seek to hunt them down and finish the job. The culture of these colonies therefore grew well intertwined with the military, as an impressive navy began to form. Most leaders had served time in the military, or planned to while in office. Being in office did not exempt one from civil duties either, and all politicians felt the need to continue contributing to society in whatever way they had before their election, because being a politician alone was not sufficient pay. Politicians were paid a minimum wage to minimize the possibility of the corruption seen back on earth, and because those of the colonies believed politics to be a service to the citizen, not a seat of power over them.
On Titan, this government took the form of a Republic, with local states being formed under them that followed a similar structure and had most of the real power in daily life. In space, the Navy was seen as the government, keeping watch over the mining operations and guarding them against piracy and exploitation.
TL;DL - Enough of the Fluff, here's the actual Phoenix Shipyards Faction
How the Guild Works
Phoenix Shipyards exists to improve the design skills of those within it. One should only consider joining Phoenix if they are open to constructive feedback on their designs.
That being said, insults are not tolerated in Phoenix Shipyards, and we place honor very highly. Those who join should work to maintain the honor of the guild, as well as hold each other to that honor. Criticism should only come in the constructive sort.
We follow a philosophy that failure is the only way to achieve success. Every failed design is simply one step closer to a successful one, and each delete of a ship occurs so a better one may take its place.
In short, the rules are simple: Respect other players and their designs If playing multiplayer - no trolling, griefing, or piracy You are free to join any other guild There is no true leadership, we are all equal as designers. Do not treat Dark Lord as one who is over you. Give credit where it is due - do not claim designs that are not yours and mention those who helped you build something.
When building for the guild, follow the guidelines posted in the next section below Guidelines are guidelines and not rules. If you have questions or problems with something, let me know.
however, the non-negotiable rules are these: Do not build vulgar ships Do not encourage your ship be used for piracy
When building, you are highly encouraged to create your own collection which will be linked to by the Phoenix Shipyards primary collection. We would love to see this collection become your own subsidiary corporation under Phoenix Shipyards, where you can build your own logo, name, and lore to mix in with our history. see an example in the subsidiaries section below.
When building for your subsidiary, the guidelines needn't be followed (except the two non-negotiables)
However, should you wish to submit your ship to the primary collection, then the guidelines need to be followed
All submissions will be reviewed by an anonymous council before being accepted into the collection. Council members may rotate with time, and only those on the council are to know who the council members are
Those whose submission are rejected will be given a detailed reason of why, along with constructive feedback and assistance (if another member is available) to help improve their designs and get it posted.
IT IS OUR GOAL to see every ship make it into the primary collection. By rejecting a design, the council's purpose is to give you something to improve upon.
Building for the Phoenix Shipyards Collection
- Phoenix Shipyards Steam Collection: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=216296607 Submit by sending me a workshop link to your file on steam
- It is required that members use the colors of Blue, White, and Black if they wish for their ship to be put on the Phoenix Shipyards steam collection page. It is suggested that black be on the bottom with white being the primary color and blue used for designs and markings, though i will not require this. Civilian ships may forgo the paint scheme entirely, and industrial ships can replace the blue with a different color (currently it is green for welding, red for grinding, and yellow for mining. following this code is suggested for consistency but i won't require it). generous amounts of gray and caution strips are also suggested for industrials. If your submission fits the requirements and is posted on the steam collection, you may feel free to post on the Phoenix Shipyards forum topic at KSH Forums
- Along with the three color scheme, you are free to introduce stripes or similar markings to designate your own "squadron" of phoenix shipyards ships
- Obviously, do not claim works that are not your own. if someone helped you or you modified their design then give them a mention. If you are found frauding designs then you and your designs will be removed.
- Gravity Drives and Internal or stacked Thrusters are not allowed for submissions (basically, if you need to turn thruster damage off for your design to work, then don't bother submitting it). Gravity Accelerators (that is, using an EXTERNAL gravity generator to drive a different, unconnected object forward) are allowed (this includes Gravity Railguns).
- Ships designed for piracy are not allowed. However, you are free to build really fast interdictor ships that could be used for piracy. Mainly this rule means don't call it piracy or encourage your ships use for such.
- The Phoenix logo is not required, but should you wish to include it, you may use the template provided on the image to the right. the Logo can be done in any variation of the blue, black, and white color scheme but should only include two of the colors (one as background and one as the logo itself)
- Ships containing vulgar names are not allowed. It is suggested, however, that you take your name from a list of mythological creatures (and preferably flying ones)
- Ships should follow the classification systems provided below, and ships within the same class should be placed within the same workshop file (exceptions made for battleship class ships, or when one file becomes too large for computers to handle - typically about 5 ships per file is a good rule, small ships should all be in the same file) - this is important as it keeps the steam page from getting overcrowded and hard to navigate
- if you want help classifying the ship or would like to introduce a new class, let me know
Military Ship Classification System
Small Ships - Fighter - military purpose small craft
- Heavy Fighter - focus is either on more weapons or armor (or both)
- Interceptor - focus on speed and anti-small craft role
- Strike Fighter - focus on heavy weaponry suited to taking on large ships, while remaining more agile and faster than bombers
- Recon Fighter - small stealth craft that are highly maneuverable. typically lack weapons due to combat designation
- Lateral Fighter - fighters that specialize in high acceleration rates that are not forward thrust. this gives them a distinctive flight dynamic and may be preferred by some pilots in combat
- Bombers - Larger small craft dedicated entirely to starbase or large ship destruction. designed to carry heavy weapons and kinetic weaponry
- Gunship - typically the largest small craft, these are heavily armed and have the ability to carry troops from one place to another, some models trade troop carrying for turrets
Large Ships
Patrol Boat - an in-between class within fighters and corvettes. They are primarily anti-fighter and escort, with greater agility than corvettes. However, they are also short ranged craft. ships should be under 600k kg
Corvette - Corvettes fill a small niche between fighters and larger ships. they are small, agile, and fast. they are typically assigned to escort and anti-fighter duties, and typically weigh around 700k-1.2mil kg
Frigate - the smallest class of ships meant that are meant to be self-sufficient, these typically focus on speed and manueverability rather than heavy payloads - typically around 1.5-3m kg
- Recon Frigate - Stealth frigates designed for extended missions. typically unarmed due to combat designation
Destroyer - Destroyers are the in-between class within Frigates and Cruisers. They provide a unique role in that they are larger and more heavily armed than frigates, yet are more manueverable than cruisers. Therefore, Destroyers typically see action in anti-frigate roles. typically around 4-5m kg
Cruiser - this class covers a larger role (some serve as carriers), but typically they are centered around a medium size of ships with a focus on speed - typically around 5-8m kg
- Carrier Cruiser - fills the role of Light Carrier. these ships, while small, maximize their space for squadrons of various small craft
- Siege Cruiser - Designed to attack stationary targets. these specialize in very large kinetic missiles and other experimental weaponry
- Artillery Cruiser - although these ships are lightly armored, it is suitable to their role, as they use special weaponry to reach the enemy where they cannot effectively return fire
- Missile Cruiser - focus on missile launchers
- Interdictor Cruiser - designed to hunt down other large ships using a high focus on speed. these ships typically operate independently or in "wolf packs"
- Assault Cruiser - Cruiser designed to breach and board enemy vessels
Battlecruiser - similar to cruiser, but with a higher focus on armor and weapons - typically around 8-20m kg
Battleship - large ships with a heavy focus on weapons and armor - typically around 20-40m kg
- Command Ship - Battleship that focuses on officer quarters and fleet operations
- Carrier - battleship sized ship with large hangars for a large number of fighters, typically designed with light armor and the intent to stay behind the front lines
- Assault Carrier - Carrier that focuses on front line combat due to heavy armor and a large number of weapons
Industrial Classification System
For naming some Industrial ships, we have a simple system to help you, the customer, understand its capabilities at a glance. A ship with the "U" designation is designed for utility. Utility is defined as a ship that moves things from one place to another, and differs from a cargo ship in that it does not have any permanent containers of its own. The number represented after the "U" is the number of large containers the ship is capable of carrying at a time. For example, the U-12 can move 12 large containers at a time. Similarly, ships marked "C" are cargo ships, and have permanent cargo containers of their own. The role of a cargo ship can vary as they can be used as ammunition carriers, fuel ships, or simple couriers. Like utility ships, cargo ships are designated by a number which shows the number of permanent large containers that they are designed with. So, for example, the C-8 is designed with 8 permanent large cargo containers.
Freighters are not designated in the same method, because their interiors are designed to hold different kinds of cargo and configurations, and therefore cannot receive a permanent designation as to how much they carry. Freighter classifications and other ship classes are as follows:
- Utility Transport - designed to pick up cargo and carry it from one place to another. cargo is not limited to containers, but may include weapons or small vehicles. The capabilities of these ships can be identified by the naming system above.
- Cargo Ship - typically serves a more dignified role than freighters, but is generally smaller also. Unlike Freighters, they are designed with a more permanent interior and cargo configuration. These configurations can be identified by the naming system above.
- Freighter - ship between 5-10m kg designed to hold different types and configurations of cargo
- Heavy Freighter - Freighter above 10m kg
- Collector Ship - Ship specialized in resource collection via hoppers
- Mining Frigate - Mining ship below or near 4m kg
- Factory Ship - abundance of refineries and assemblers, the current model (Kraken) also has grinders so it can recycle ships
Civilian Classification System
Yacht - under 1 mil kg
Cruise Liner - over 1 mil kg

Subsidiaries of Phoenix Shipyards
Members of Phoenix Shipyards are encouraged to create their own Subsidiary corporations to host their own line of ships within Phoenix itself. This gives the members an opportunity to customize their lines with logos, names, and lore that intertwines with the primary source material.
Phoenix Fleet Systems (Dark Lord)
Phoenix Fleet Systems is the oldest member of the Phoenix Shipyards mega-corporation, and began very shortly after the colonization of the Saturn system. Highly patriotic, the members of Phoenix Fleet Systems pride themselves on military technology, and currently comprise the majority of the Phoenix Navy fleet. Believing that defense of the colonies is most important, they have very few industrial or civilian ships in comparison, and most industrial models are simply converted military ships.
Phoenix B Division (Brischkopp)
As the Phoenix Republic grew and founded more colonies, more shipyard capacities were needed. As a result, the Phoenix B Division was established. The headquarter and main shipyard is located in the orbit of Jupiter's moon Europa. With a shipyard near the border of the Republic, the republican fleets can be reinforced much faster.
Leviathan Mini-Fleet (SirChilidog99)
Tristavian Shipyards Inc (Tristavius)
TVSI: Phoenix began life only recently as Mars based design group Tristavian Shipyards Inc, focusing on high-tech premium naval vessels aimed at many of the wealthier countries, colonies and interest groups operating within Sol. Officially an earth-registered company, the core design team included former high level employees of several key corporations and militaries on both sides of the Earth/Colonies political divide, including Mars Based RedIron Industrial, Trans-lunar Systems, Phoenix Fleet Systems and GME Inc. Originally leasing several disused shipyards at the Mars/Sol L1 Lagrangian point, the company surprised the market with their first production-line cruiser leading to a high number of orders from several key clients. Keen to capitalize on this success a frigate design was released to complement the line-up and the initial down payments gave the company the required resources to begin construction of a larger fleet command carrier.
Production of the original carrier prototype was severely delayed after a series of industrial accidents. These incidents were officially blamed on the aging facilities being rented, though many have suggested deliberate sabotage by pro-earth terrorist groups unhappy with the company's connections to the outer rim colonies. During this period it was announced to shareholders that TVSI was nearing completion of its own shipyard facilities at an 'undisclosed location', leading to further media speculation about connections to various semi-legal colonial groups and militaries.
The crisis point eventually arrived when Sol-webnet AI 'Guardians' collated various social media postings by employees working on the carrier project, many of whom seemed to be considering new placements in the outer rim or were being dismissed with generous redundancy pay just weeks before several carriers were due off the production lines.
Under the pretence of a workers-union inspection, investigators from Earth's major governments found the rented shipyards largely abandoned and the 'nearly complete' hulls nowhere to be found. It was quickly discovered that over the last few months, a controlling interest in the company had been purchased by several umbrella corporations with links to colonial militaries.
Although silent for several days, the TVSI PR department eventually released a statement which entirely ignored the questions many wished to hear answered. Instead the company announced the completion of its new shipyards facilities around previously uninhabited Tethys, and the cancellation and full refund of several carrier orders, all to earth-linked interest groups. The webnet is currently swarming with conspiracy theories on the recent promotional material, with many pointing out what looks to be a Phoenix Systems logo on one picture and what many say is the ventral tip of a Phoenix battleship not quite cropped out of another.
