History

Founding

Phoenix PMC/PIC, formerly Phoenix Para-Military, was formed after the end of world war two, in the wake of growing tensions between the Eastern and Western powers. While they were employed by both the US and Russia over the course of the Cold War, they were never directly involved in combat, being contracted mainly for intelligence gathering. The Para-military group's founder, Montgomery Ashford, formed the group with members of his old SAS unit, who left with him after he was declared unfit for service due to several bullet-wounds that he gained saving a group of french soldiers. His 2nd in command, James Hemingway, was reputed to be the only person who'd openly challenge Ashford's judgement, and his relationship with his commanding officer has been described as "Brotherly."

The relationship between Ashford and his men was also somewhat familial, although in this respect he took a much more fatherly approach, and the loyalty of his troops was legendary. At that time, Phoenix specialised in intelligence gathering and small-scale military operations, but they weren't actually in combat until 1980.

Expansion

After the conflict in Somalia in 1980, which raised questions about the group's ethics, Phoenix re-evaluated it's values, and began to expand into the privatised military construction section, buying out Zsenn Aerospace Engineering in the process. Ashford hired a number of financial advisers and appointed a CEO, choosing to run the military side of the new PMC. Over time, they bought out the Callahan Mining Initiative and moved into the commercial extraction and processing of metals and other mining-related substances.

The Pacific Oil Fiasco

The infamous incident with Pacific Oil off the Gulf of Mexico, in which the world's largest oil tanker capsized, turned out to be a boon for Phoenix's public relations when personnel from the nearby Phoenix-owned oil rig coordinated a rapid rescue operation for the crew, and were credited with reducing the size of the spill by setting up containment booms within half an hour of the distress signal being received. This led to further expansion into the crude oil market, making Phoenix one of the richest PMC/PICs to date.

Into space

Phoenix's long-standing contract to supply NASA with engine and flight-control components placed them in an ideal position once privatised space-travel and off-planet mining began to 'take off'. In a cruel twist of fate, Montgomery Ashford died just months before the maiden voyage of Phoenix's first ever non-experimental space-craft, "Fortune". From there, Phoenix went from strength to strength, rapidly outpacing the competition in terms of development speed, and by the first ever inter-planetary war in 2069, Phoenix PMC/PIC was a galactic power-house who's stellar presence is difficult to ignore.

Home System

Atimos II's orbit path means it stays within reach of the sun at all times, never passing behind the planet

In the year 2073, Phoenix PMC/PIC took control of Atimos II, a small moon in the Alvarrez System, after the UNSE (United Nations Space Envoy) declared the surface of the planet inhospitable and dangerous due to the extreme temperatures caused by it's thin atmosphere. Phoenix spent just short of three billion dollars terraforming the planet and modifying it's atmosphere, before building a number of installations and a respectably sized space-port on the surface of the moon.

Controversies

Somalian Conflict

Phoenix's role in the Somalian conflict of 1980 put it in the firing line from a number of humanitarian groups, which ultimately led to a number of hefty reparations and the Phoenix Group's rebirth as a Private Military and Industrial Contractor (PMC/PIC).

Suspected Ethics Violations

Phoenix was, at one point, under investigation after an anonymous informant apparently leaked that the company was genetically engineering super-humans and breaching the code of ethics regarding the creation and destruction of embryonic chimera. The informant was never identified or heard from again, and the investigation turned up nothing. Phoenix PMC/PIC's chairman at the time, Tobias Roman released a statement accusing the company's main rivals, Astrocorp, of industrio-political subterfuge. As there was almost no basis for the investigation in the first place, Phoenix was cleared of any wrong-doing.

Notable People

As old as the Private Military/Industrial Contractor is, it has had it's fair share of notable people. Several of them are listed below.

Katherine Lilith Green

Often referred to as 'The Demon' was the engineering officer in charge of the terraforming operations on Atimos II. During the later stages of the process, the moon was attacked and occupied by the Sanguine Ravens, a pirate group notorious for planetary theft and ransom. Katherine Lilith Green escaped from the custody of the pirates and employed a knowledge of chemistry and guerrilla tactics, slowly reducing the pirates' numbers and freeing many of her fellows in the process, some of whom assisted her in the night-time raids she took on.

By the time Phoenix's fleet arrived, the pirates were on the defensive, having had the engines on their ships melted with thermite and with half of their troops missing, dead or seriously injured. In memory of her valor, a statue was erected outside the main building, depicting her holding a conical flask and a grenade. When asked to comment on the statue, Katherine is credited with saying: "I don't know who thought a statue would be a good idea, but my hair never looked so good"

'Rebecca'

Rebecca first became known to the contracting group when a routine contract for long term system-patrols turned up a small satellite outpost around one of the planets. When the satellite refused to respond to hails, despite obviously being recently manned, the PCS Justicar moved closer to investigate. The Satellite, being controlled and operated by pirates, scrambled fighters and opened fire. After the weapons and fighters had been neutralised, the commander docked with the station to search for survivors. On board, despite the fact that most of the station was intact, all of the pirates had been killed. The lone survivor was a 26 year old female, who claimed to be named Rebecca. The Station's database was damaged, but it was ascertained that they dealt in the slave-trade, and although Rebecca seems relatively normal, she refuses to talk about her past, and claims to never have been given a second name.

The prevailing theory behind her origins is that she was born into servitude, and took advantage of the chaos caused by the battle to systematically kill the pirates. She has undergone several psychological screenings but these have revealed no further explanation as to her past.
